What do you think are the essential components of a successful internal recruitment/promotion system? Why?
Prioritize competency/skill development: An organization has to have ways to identify, measure, and assess competencies/skills of the roles in an organization of it’s employees. It’s critical that an organization is able to match core competencies/skills of jobs to the people within the organization. A robust and integrated talent management program should be a top priority for any organization looking to leverage human capital in an effective and sustainable way.
Cross-functional/Enterprise Communication: Having a system in place that prioritizes the communication of internal opportunities is critical for making internal talent feel like they are prioritized and for making them aware an opportunity exists. This requires strong coordination across managers, departments, HR, and recruiting.
Lattice work v. Ladder: organizational buy-in that lateral moves (lattice work) for development opportunities can be advantageous for the organization and the employee. Understanding that moving to a role to gain exposure to a certain competency/skill set can then setup an opportunity for a higher position down the road. This can be in the form of job rotations, leadership programs, temporary assignments, or formal job openings that need to be applied to.
